Biography:

dance & holistic health Clare Guss-West – BHum, MA,

teaching artist and teacher trainer

Clare's international work brings together the fields of professional dance, opera and holistic health

Four years steering committee member of RESEO 2010 – 2014, she remains as Dance Advisor to the network and leads the Nureyev Foundation 2015 RESEO member offer of free workshops for local dancing groups of all levels.

Clare trained as a classical & contemporary dancer and musician and holds a BHum in dance & music and an MA in drama & theatre arts. She began her career as a performer with “Second Stride” dance company and as a choreographer creating works commissioned by The Place, London. Following the success of several works with American composer Philip Glass, she became resident choreographer and later director at English National Opera, London. As opera director she created productions for The Lyric Opera of Chicago, Los Angeles Opera, Seattle and San Francisco Operas, Netherlands Opera, Wiesbaden & Kiel Operas, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, BBC Proms, Opera de Paris Bastille.

As a result of injury, her work deepened to include studies in holistic health (chi kung practitioner and therapeutic-remedial massage). From her own clinic practice Clare went on to become Managing Director of Six Senses Spas - international well being company.
In response to her injuries she published her own movement method - ‘The Energy Source’ – simple daily exercise for mind and body vitality – enhancing movement through the visualisation of energy. This work she integrated into productions at ENO, Opèra de Paris and the ROH. It was recognized with a Laurence Olivier nomination for outstanding achievement in Opera and has become the foundation of her teaching to this day.

Today Clare specialises in the integration of holistic wellbeing and dance - teaching holistic approaches to the training of professional classical ballet notably for RESEO members Finnish National Ballet and Opera de Paris and on the Professional Dancer's Postgraduate in Teaching at Berlin Staatsballett, RAD. She additionally delivers CPD (continuous professional development) teacher training for the Royal Academy of Dance and L'Ecole Superieure de Danse, Cannes in: ‘dancing longevity’ – foundations of dance practice for the elderly and she regularly presents her innovative work and research for IADMS (International Association of Dance Medicine & Science).
