Reinventing Don Giovanni with 100 Young Opera Enthusiasts

27 March, 2018

One hundred young people have been working together for the past year and a half to reinvent Mozart’s Don Giovanni. In this collective project aimed at developing participants’ creative skills and capacity for self-expression, difference is a true asset.

Un Autre Don Juan (“Another Don Juan”) is a collective project of expression and creation that gives the floor to 100 young people from a wide variety of cultures and backgrounds, who have been working together for over a year and a half to reinterpret Mozart’s famous opera Don Giovanni. Collaboration, openness and reflection are the aims of this project which pushes young people to surpass themselves.

The project is a collaboration between the Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège and the Maisons de Jeunes en Belgique Francophone (Federation of Youth Centers of French-speaking Belgium). A hundred young people were recruited from 13 youth centers to join the adventure.

Un Autre Don Juan is above all a tool for personal, social and cultural development of young people. The very nature of the project is to actively involve young people in creation by focusing on their full potential. A real place is guaranteed to everyone, whatever their abilities, desires or needs. Difference is considered an asset. The goal is to push the youth to overcome difficulties and make them true strengths.

To carry out this project, the Opera has made significant investments with help from partners such as The National Lottery and the Fonds Reine Mathilde through the “Music Connects # 2” call. The Federation of Youth Centers, for its part, has also mobilized a network of support and partners.

Opéra Royal de Wallonie-Liège have launched a crowdfunding campaign in order to raise a further €12,500 which will enable them to complete the project and create costumes and sets.
