The World Health Organisation defines health as “A state of complete physical, mental and social well-being, and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity”. Cultural participation is continually demonstrated to have a positive impact on health and wellbeing, both on individuals and society at large. Artistic practice is shown to reduce anxiety and depression, prevent disease and improve management of chronic illness, but also combat loneliness, strengthen community ties and foster a sense of civic belonging.
The deeper the engagement, the greater the impact: when people of all ages, backgrounds, physical abilities and socioeconomic status come together not only to experience culture, but to co-create new narratives, the benefits extend far beyond the individual, contributing to healthier and more democratic societies. And as wider society becomes more aware of the potential of the arts to address wider societal issues, the role of artists and cultural spaces is evolving. Artists and educators are increasingly called upon to act as facilitators, advocates and bridge-builders – but without the formal training, recognition or resources those roles require.
The RESEO Conference 2025 invites arts professionals, educators, artists and cultural managers to explore these new dynamics, how arts practice intersects with health, education and social work and the wellbeing of the communities and professionals at the heart of that work. Hosted by Estonian National Opera, the conference will offer space for critical reflection, exchange, cross-sector collaboration, and perspectives from beyond the European Union. We hope to see many of you there!
Registration opening June 2025.
