Participatory arts and young audience productions in Europe
In 2024, RESEO launched an ongoing research project that aims to monitor the evolution of participatory work and young audience productions led by operas, orchestras, and dance companies across Europe. The initiative highlight artistic projects that promote diversity, cultural rights and social engagement within the cultural sector through surveys providing a biannual overview of the field.
Participatory projects
A particular focus is placed on projects that address pressing social and cultural issues, such as:
- Inclusion and accessibility
- Special needs and disability
- Cultural capability of communities
- Cultural rights
- Health, wellbeing, and mental health
- Climate change
- Ageing society
- Migration
- Digitalisation
In addition to work with audiences and communities, the research also explores internal transformations within cultural institutions. Case studies may reflect efforts such as:
- Upskilling artists and project leaders engaged in participatory work and the professionalisation of the field.
- Inclusive approaches to cultural project management
- Increasing diversity among professional artists
- Theorisation of participatory and community processes
The research also focuses on productions aimed at young audiences, as well as productions that tend not to be included in mainstream programming.
Methodology
Eligible projects include those carried out or scheduled to take place within cultural institutions. A wide range of documentation formats are considered, including protocols, surveys, project reports, anthropological analysis, filmed ethnography and podcasts.
The next edition will call for projects implemented before February 2026.
The future European report will be informed by submissions from the field, a review of existing literature, a repertory of ongoing initiatives, and qualitative interviews with artists, cultural leaders and representatives from the European Commission.
