Opéra de Montréal

Opéra de Montréal: A voice for communities

In 2018, Opéra de Montréal implemented its Impact Opéra programme to raise awareness of opera among all audiences. This programme offers a variety of cultural activities in the community or in schools, carried out by a team of dedicated artist-educators and collaborators. The aim of the programme is to raise awareness of opera and introduce it to a wide audience, so that opera becomes a lever for social change and an essential educational tool.

Aims

Through the development of a variety of workshops and co-creation projects, the Opéra de Montréal creates social ties, fosters personal development, facilitates social rehabilitation and reintegration, breaks down isolation, stimulates community cohesion, contributes to physical and psychological well-being, and provides an emotional experience that enriches and transforms, while offering an innovative pedagogical tool in the classroom that encourages artistic expression, strengthens language skills and stimulates students’ creativity.

A flagship project

The Espace Transition à l’Opéra project is a co-creation in which a dozen participants, aged 15 to 24, with mental health problems, are the architects and performers of the creation of a mini-opera.

Why we’re RESEO members:

We wish to join RESEO to forge links with those involved in education and social outreach in the European opera world. The European community offers highly innovative projects and we want to be at the heart of exchanges about new practices, thus enriching our thinking on music outreach. What’s more, as the only French-language opera house in North America, this alliance will enable us to continue developing our practices in a linguistic and cultural context that reflects our values.
